Aims and Scope
“Balgarski ezik” / Bulgarian Language Journal is a scientific journal dedicated to the comprehensive study of the Bulgarian language. It publishes original research of high scholarly merit in all areas of Bulgarian linguistics, as well as in general and Slavic linguistics, theoretical, applied, and computational linguistics. The journal welcomes contributions on the history, dialectal diversity, and contemporary state of Bulgarian, covering all linguistic domains including grammar, lexicon, dialectology, etymology, onomastics, ethnolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, along with interdisciplinary studies.
Articles published in “Balgarski ezik” contribute to the advancement of typological and contrastive studies by providing the global scholarly community with comprehensive research and insights into Bulgarian as a Slavic, Balkan, and European language, including from a contrastive perspective.
The journal also plays a significant role in preserving Bulgaria’s linguistic, cultural, and historical heritage, elucidating national and cultural identity through language, and promoting linguistic competence and awareness in society.
“Balgarski ezik” is intended for scholars, educators, and students.

Periodicity
“Balgarski ezik” / Bulgarian Language Journal has been published continuously since its founding in 1951. It follows a regular quarterly publication schedule, with four issues per year, one at the end of each quarter. Since 2010, an annual Supplement has also been published, featuring both articles and extended studies.
Access and language
“Balgarski ezik” / Bulgarian Language Journal is an open-access journal, offering free and unrestricted online access on the Joutnal's website to the full texts of all articles published since 2015. These publications are also available through platforms such as the Central and Eastern European Online Library (CEEOL), Crossref, the Slavic Humanities Index (CHI), EBSCO host, OpenAlex.
The journal publishes under the Creative Commons Attribution (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International – CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0) license.
In addition to the online version, the journal is available in print, distributed to over 50 libraries worldwide and accessible via subscription.
All articles are published in Bulgarian. Materials submitted in another language are translated into Bulgarian after approval for publication.
Fees
The journal does not charge authors any fees.
Funding
The publication of the journal is supported by the budget allocated to the Publicher – the Institute for Bulgarian Language Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Bulgarian National Science Fund (Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria), and revenue from subscriptions to the printed edition.
Reviewers do not receive any compensation for their work.
The journal does not engage in advertising or marketing activities.
History
“Balgarski ezik” (Bulgarian Language Journal) was founded in 1951. Its founding editor was Corresponding Member Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin, who served as Editor-in-Chief until 1975. He was succeeded by Academician Vladimir Georgiev (1976–1986), Academician Valentin Stankov (1987–2003), and Prof. DSc Vladko Murdarov (2003–2016).
The journal was established to promote the results of scientific work of the Institute for Bulgarian Language both within Bulgaria and internationally. Over the decades, it has become one of the most prestigious periodicals in the field of Bulgarian linguistics, providing a platform for research by Bulgarian and international scholars from various academic institutions, with all articles published in Bulgarian.
The International Editorial Board has included distinguished experts in Slavic and Bulgarian linguistics, such as Prof. Heinz Miklas (Austria), Prof. Kjetil Ra Hauge (Norway), Prof. Kiril Mirchev (Bulgaria), Prof. Vincen Blanar (Slovakia), Prof. Karl Gutschmidt (Germany), Prof. Imre Toth (Hungary), Prof. Dora Ivanova-Mircheva (Bulgaria), Prof. Grigorii Venediktov (Russia), Prof. Tadeusz Szymanski (Poland), Prof. Todor Boyadzhiev (Bulgaria) et al.
Open access policy & License to publish
“Balgarski ezik” / Bulgarian Language Journal provide immediate open access to its content. There are no fees or restrictions for publishing or downloading papers. The journal complies with the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) definition of Open Access: the free availability on the public internet, the permission for all users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full text of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain is to guarantee the original authors with control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.
The “Balgarski ezik” / Bulgarian Language Journal has signed the Declaration of BOAI.
We support a greater global exchange of knowledge by making the research published in Bulgarian Language journal open to the public and reusable without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.
All articles are available under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International – CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0). You can share – copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format. The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms. You must give appropriate credit , provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made . You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. You may not use the material for commercial purposes. f you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material. You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
The benefits of open access are that:
- Articles are freely and permanently available online immediately after publication, allowing for wider distribution and increased visibility.
- Authors retain copyright on their articles. Publications may be reused and distributed as long as their author is properly cited.
- Open access journals are tracked for citations and deposited in bibliographic databases and institutional repositories without any embargo period just like traditional journals.
- There are no space limitations for supplementary material, including figures, extensive data, and videos.
Copyright Policy
Authors retain copyrightAuthors who publish in the ”Balgarski ezik” (Bulgarian Language Journal) retain the copyright on their works without restrictions. After approval of the manuscript, the authors sign a Publishing Agreement, agreeing to have their material published under the Creative Commons Attribution license (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International – CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0). Publications may be shared, reused, and distributed for non-commercial purposes, as long as the original author is correctly attributed, a link to the license is provided, and changes, if any, are indicated.
Citation tracking and inclusion in bibliographic databasesThis open access periodical is tracked for impact factors and is deposited into bibliographic databases and institutional repositories without any embargo period just as traditional journals.
Digital Arhiving Policy
In order to guarantee permanent and secure storage of the publications, all full-text content of the “Balgarski ezik” (Bulgarian Language Journal) is archived in the following databases:
- CEEOL – Central and Eastern European Online Library
- CROSSREF – Digital Object Identifier Registration Agency of the International DOI Foundation (since 2018)
- SHI – Slavic Humanities Index
- Bulgarian Portal for Open Science
Since 2015, the full texts of the materials published in the „Balgarski ezik“ (Bulgarian Language Journal) have been available online on the Joutnal's website in the "Archive" section (via Archive). Articles are published in a standard electronic format (in pdf format), providing an open access online repository immediately on publication.
For archiving purposes, the Journal retains copies of the submitted manuscripts and supporting files. Rejected articles are deleted at the request of the authors.
The Journal’s content archive is also stored on an independent server of the Institute for Bulgarian Language (BAS) for additional security.
Self-archivingThe Author has the right to deposit the version of the Manuscript accepted for publication, as well as the published version in PDF format in non-commercial repositories, as well as to publish it on his personal website or on the website of the respective academic institution (including on scientific networks, e.g. ResearchGate, Academia.edu, etc.) at any time after publication in the Journal and in accordance with Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0. license. The Bulgarian Language Journal / Balgarski ezik must be indicated as the original source along with a link to the publication in it.
